A new section in Paradigm documenting what goes on behind the scenes during a recording session. The following took place in June 2019 at Rad Pro Studios in Ontario, Calif.
“Our other guitarist and bassist, we lost them in a car accident.”
Mike’s face is ashen as he delivered the news and then, “No, I’m just kidding.”
He's trying to say the Local Retards’ lineup has undergone change more recently. They’ve brought in The Deleted singer Danny as fill-in bass, although, they’re hoping he’ll stay.
It’s a Friday night at Rad Pro Studios in Ontario and the guys are recording their eight-song demo, due out soon. Titled “Blood, Sweat and Beers,” it’s all new songs as they gear up for two big shows: July 21 at the Five Star Bar with The Deleted and Stäläg 13, followed by July 27 at Crusty Palms in Arizona.
It’s a six-hour drive, but Mike assured everyone, “We’ll make it in two.”
“We’re here,” Flurffy said, “and we’re coming hard and fast.”
Cue the laughter.
About an Hour Into Recording...
Danny (bass): Flurffy fucked it up, not me.
Mike (drums): You guys better not get drunk; it’s our first song. We’re going to have a one-song demo.
Flurffy (guitar): A single.
And Then This Happened...
Mike: You got extra strings?
Flurffy: No.... Practice is over.
Danny: I got you.
Have You Reached Your Limit...
Mike: I know Danny’s drunk cause he gets that little kid look.
On the Song “Humanitarian Crime”...
Mike: When I was writing it I had written this article about the Middle East and Sudan and shit and how they were forced to.... I can’t remember. It was three years ago.
On "731"...
Eric (vocals): “731” is about World War II and how the Japanese took prisoners of war and fucking tortured them and did experiments on them, cut people up when they were still alive. If you read about it, it’s Unit 731.
On the Song "Shoot Now, Think Never"...
Eric: There’s a metal band from the area. The singer of that band we played a few gigs with back in the day.
Mike: He was a consumer [of drugs]. Someone lured him to an abandoned house.
Eric: Things went south and they ended up shooting him in the head. People go out there and shoot. They pull the trigger and it means nothing to them. The way I see it they’re fucking savages. Disgusting. It’s what led me to write that song.
Taking a Bit of a Backseat...
Danny: I’ve been doing vocals in The Deleted for so long. It’s cool just to stand back and watch things happen. With them [the Local Retards], they already have the music. They already have the songs. That’s why it’s fun for me.
