NOW RECORDING
A new section in Paradigm documenting what goes on behind the scenes during a recording session. The following took place in May 2019 in San Pedro, Calif.
It's a little bit like Fear and Loathing in San Pedro, albeit nowhere near Hunter Thompson status. Still, it's a little out of control and a sliding scale of sobriety.
With Harbor area band Alter Boys and Orange County's Kamikaze Co Pilot, it's part of the process for the evening. The point, after all, is for their music to smack you in the face with their split, 11-song EP, "Split Faced," now out. Here, a little bit of the behind the scenes from the recording for their album's music video.
The Making of This Album...
Nick Ellis (Alter Boys guitar): We recorded in a day. They came in at 5 p.m., started at 7 and left at 4 in the morning.
Jon Mann (Kamikaze guitar): When we were driving home, me and Elliott (drums), we made a couple jokes about being shift faced, said split faced and it stuck.
How We Met...
Jon: One of you guys hit me up on Instagram.
Tony Cueto (Alter Boys drummer): That was me.
Jon: We went back and forth, “Dude, you guys are sick.” “No, you guys are sick.”
Alex Davis (Kamikaze bass): It was love at first sight.
On the song "Sink"...
Jack Ponce (Alter Boys vocals): I don't want to get some backlash for it. I was in an eight-year relationship with my fiancée at the time. So it’s just about an ex-girlfriend. We lived together for eight years. When that goes away, you have to get over it.
Remembering the Inspiration Behind Certain Songs...
Jack: Some songs I do remember. I remember my reasons [for writing them]. I guess a lot of times on our set list, we play all our songs back to back. So a lot of times, I’m singing just to be aggressive, but there’s still heart behind it.
Nick: Like music memory.
On “Pebble Death”
Alex: Every skater knows there’s a point every two seconds you’re going to hit a pebble.
Tristen Adamson (Kamikaze vocals): There’s always a chance a pebble could ruin your life.
Kamikaze's Song “Curb Your Pride”...
Alex: It’s pretty much our fuck racist people song.
Jon: Hey, you really wrote the crap out of that song, Tristen. Tristen and I worked on that song for like eight months.
Tristen: It’s hard to keep it from getting cheesy. When I’m yelling, I don’t want to sing about some wuss shit if I’m yelling being all angry. I want it be like some cool shit.
Taking a hiatus...?
Jack: After [this release] we’re taking a writing break.
Johnny (Alter Boys bass): Just say we’re breaking up and we’re coming back.
Jack: We’re trying to come out with a full length.
